Trans Swiss Trail: Neuchâtel–Murten

Properties of the itinerarie

Difficulty: Very easy

Duration: 04:45

Distance: 19 km

Ascent/Descent: +253m / -235m

Altitude min./max.: 430m / 643m

The route takes you from Neuchâtel to Murten, where you are immediately plunged into the tranquillity of a Mediterranean climate and a pretty lakeside landscape.

Take a boat to Cudrefin, on the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel. The path goes through the Grande Cariçaie, an important nature reserve and a real sanctuary for wildlife, the only one of its kind in Switzerland and home to the largest number of bird species in the country. The nature centre in La Sauge is perfect for a well-earned rest. Continue towards Le Tonkin along the La Broye canal, then climb through the forest as far as Mont Vully, from where there are panoramic views over the plateau and Alps. After crossing the vineyard, the path continues from Sugiez towards Murten, via the Chablais forest. Numerous observation towers offer you the chance to admire the wildlife close to the lake. The path ends in Murten, a charming little mediaeval town, where you can climb onto the city walls or enjoy a coffee beneath the arcades.

Tip: many of Murten’s historic monuments have been preserved; take the opportunity to climb onto the city walls, including the circular walk, which is accessible all year round.
