The Morat/Murten Gate was built in the 1410s at the edge of a natural gorge that had been spanned by the fortified Donnamary Bridge
The tower, originally a square shell structure, is 34 metres high. In 1888, part of the structure was demolished for street-widening and, in 1950, another opening in the wall was made next to the gate.
